For many years, in many parts of the world, the Raleigh “Sports” three-speed bicycle was considered the ultimate in human-powered transportation.
Some bike parts have a date code cast or stamped into the piece. This clearly is when the component was made and not when the bike was made, but unless the component or bike manufacturer had lots of stock lying around in inventory, the date should be a fairly good indication of the year of the bike. At least it would be the earliest date that the bike could have been made. Of course, all this assumes the bike has the original component.
The most likely components to be original are the stem, handlebars, seatpost, and brakes. On a vintage bike in excellent condition that apparently had a lonely existence in a garage all of the components likely are original. As the wear on a vintage bike increases, the greater the likelihood components are not original, either through replacement of worn parts or through component swaps.
Swaps can take place early in the life of a bike as the proud new owner upgrades to new or used components of higher quality.
The Catalina Project
The company history began more than one hundred years before then, in a time and in a Europe that would be wholly alien to those of us brought up over the recent generations. To be concise, the origin was some decades before then in when Josef Werndl b. He improved manufacturing techniques and diversified their offerings. They would continue the manufacturing but also develop the Werndl-rifle Model , a new modern breech loading rifle system. Working with talented engineers including Ferdinand Mannlicher the company became the leading European producer of small arms.
The main categories of bicycles in relation to their intended use are: Road bicycles are designed for traveling at speed on paved roads.; Touring bicycles are designed for bicycle touring and long journeys. They are durable and comfortable, capable of transporting baggage, and have a wide gear range.
Losing a Key Hormone Slower metabolisms were not the only reason the contestants regained weight, though. They constantly battled hunger, cravings and binges. The investigators found at least one reason: The contestants started out with normal levels of leptin. As their weight returned, their leptin levels drifted up again, but only to about half of what they had been when the season began, the researchers found, thus helping to explain their urges to eat.
Leptin is just one of a cluster of hormones that control hunger, and although Dr. Hall and his colleagues did not measure the rest of them, another group of researchers, in a different project, did. Joseph Proietto of the University of Melbourne and his colleagues recruited 50 overweight people who agreed to consume just calories a day for eight or nine weeks.

Brakes Older Raleigh-made brakes used special cables with moulded ends on both ends of the cables, as shown. These cables are no longer available. They were supplied in different configurations for front, gent’s rear and lady’s rear applications.

Some of the mid ‘s straight gauge frames had serial numbers starting with a single letter which was towards the end of the alphabet. This new system applied to the high-end i. Reynolds frames, and involved the placing of a character at the beginning of the serial number.
Who Were Austro-Daimler? When I bought my Vent Noir II in the Austro-Daimler Puch company was a wholly owned subsidiary of the famous Steyr-Daimler-Puch consortium. The company history began more than one hundred years before then, in a time and in a Europe that would be wholly alien to those of us brought up over the recent generations.
December, Johnny Berry was a Manchester, U. Berry built to a high standard. His frames had a good reputation, performed well, and had a recognizable style. Berry was an avid cyclist and an active member of the Manchester Wheelers. He joined the club in either or , competed in time trials through the early s, organized races, led club rides, and served as president in and 6, 19, Bentley managed the shop.
Berry focused on frame building, skills that he had learned in the Manchester area from Tim Heeley frame builder at Stenton Glider and, later, Heeley Lightweight 8. Early examples strongly resembled Stenton Glider frames During the war, Berry was only able to build a few frames while working at the British Oxygen Company in a reserved occupation 8. Forks had a corresponding serial number; at first the numbers were stamped on the steerer tube and later under the fork crown
The bike was a disaster–a real rust bucket–but as I tore it down, I was astounded to see that it was largely unused and almost completely original. None of the bearings had any visible wear, and even the brake pads, gears, chain, and cable sheaths were ones that came new with the bike. The only nonoriginal part was the saddle; I assume that the original leather one died a moldy death as the bike sat decaying in a series of garages. My philosophy of old bikes probably won’t be approved by most purists.
I am not interested in creating museum pieces; I have no interest in a bike I can’t ride. I don’t have the time, inclination, or energy to research any bike in detail and to determine its original configuration, down to the last lockwasher.

Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest comes from a sketch said to be from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud. Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus.
Drais invented his Laufmaschine German for “running machine” in , that was called Draisine English or draisienne French by the press. Karl von Drais patented this design in , which was the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine, commonly called a velocipede , and nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse. Hans-Erhard Lessing Drais’ biographer found from circumstantial evidence that Drais’ interest in finding an alternative to the horse was the starvation and death of horses caused by crop failure in , the Year Without a Summer following the volcanic eruption of Tambora in This design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America.
Its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to increasing numbers of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use.

Ancient Greek vase painting By convention, finely painted vessels of all shapes are called “vases”, and there are over , significantly complete surviving pieces, giving with the inscriptions that many carry unparalleled insights into many aspects of Greek life. Sculptural or architectural pottery, also very often painted, are referred to as terracottas , and also survive in large quantities. In much of the literature, “pottery” means only painted vessels, or “vases”.
Pottery was the main form of grave goods deposited in tombs, often as “funerary urns” containing the cremated ashes, and was widely exported. The famous and distinctive style of Greek vase-painting with figures depicted with strong outlines, with thin lines within the outlines, reached its peak from about to BC, and divides into the two main styles, almost reversals of each other, of black-figure and red-figure painting, the other colour forming the background in each case.
Other colours were very limited, normally to small areas of white and larger ones of a different purplish-red.
WELCOME TO THE BICYCLE MUSEUM. Bicycles are wonderfully simple, eloquent and efficient machines. A few of the bikes were purchased by me, or for me, new, including the brown Schwinn SuperSport, the Trek , the Univega FS, and the Trek (for one of my sons).
Seat lug serial number, mens’ Seat lug serial number, ladies’ Dropout serial number, Super Course and Grand Prix Alternate serial system shown Serial convention: At present, I have insufficent information about the serial numbers from this era to construct a definite chart of every example used during this time period. At least 4 or 5 different systems were used. I have uncovered two of them to a reasonable extent; both of which ran concurrently to each other during this time period: This system showed its face in I have named it accordingly , and was phased out in mid Evidence indicates that a handful of ‘ ’71 frames – or their lugs, depending on when the stamping was done – may not have been released from the factory until , and were consequently decaled as models.
This is the only explanation I can suggest regarding this issue. This system never exeeded 6 digits, and the reason for its introduction remains a mystery. Regardless, it is here, and it will stay. The serials from this era, specifically for general production machines Sports, Superbe, Sprite , will be located on the seat lug. Unknown where they are located on DL-1s. Keep in mind that the serials used for Raleigh Choppers – while apparently a nearly identical 7-digit system – do not corrispond well with those of the larger bicycles.
For now, it should be assumed that the Choppers’ serial system is separate until proven otherwise.

Larger Image The name says it all – the top of the Schwinn line. Schwinn today is part of Pacific Cycle. While Schwinn often had a reputation for building heavy bikes for kids, the Paramount line had a reputation for finely crafted, relatively light road bikes. That is obviously a great price. The very nice woman selling it was good natured about the low price.
The bike had belonged to her uncle who no longer used it.
The Catalina Project. Steve Maas, Long Beach, California, USA. March – September, In late March of , I became the owner of a Carlton Catalina touring bike, made in England in (as close as I can tell) the mid s, and I promptly set about the task of restoring it.

Many of these timber-built structures remain standing and are still in use today, including factories, warehouses, schools, temples, and churches — some dating as far back as the seventh century. Famous examples include the Courtesy of Martin Tessler. As a result, timber has more or less been relegated for use as a material for smaller structures.

Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.
First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention. For a while some had claimed that Leonardo Da Vinci invented the bicycle based on a sketch found in his Codex Atlanticus. However, this sketch was later determined to be a forgery, though many historical accounts written before this forgery was discovered still credit Da Vinci as the inventor of the bicycle.
There were a few “pre-bicycles” invented before the appearance of what one would recognize as a bicycle. The first of these was probably the “Celerifere” developed by a French count named Mede de Sivrac in It consisted of two wheels connected by a beam and was decorated to look like a horse or a lion. There was no steering mechanism or pedals and it was basically a whimsical novelty meant to entertain the idle rich.
